What is chitosan hemostatic gauze and how does it work?
Chitosan is a natural polymer with a positive charge. When it touches blood, it attracts negatively-charged red blood cells, sealing the wound mechanically. Unlike hemostats that rely on the clotting cascade, chitosan works independently of the clotting cascade, making it ideal for people who normally have trouble stopping bleeding. When AllaQuix® High-Performance touches a wound, the chitosan fibers attract red blood cells like a magnet and form a seal mechanically. What is chitosan hemostatic gauze and how does it work?

Is chitosan gauze FDA approved?
AllaQuix® High-Performance is FDA reviewed and cleared for OTC use in the management of minor cuts, abrasions, and lacerations.
Does chitosan gauze work for people on blood thinners?
Yes. Because the mechanism is independent of the clotting cascade, AllaQuix® High-Performance is well suited to patients on warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Plavix, or daily aspirin who have trouble stopping minor bleeding. It is for minor topical bleeding only, not emergencies.
How is chitosan gauze different from regular gauze?
Regular cotton gauze absorbs blood but does not actively help it stop. Chitosan gauze attracts red blood cells with a positive charge and forms a seal at the wound surface. That is why chitosan is the dressing of choice for people who normally have trouble stopping bleeding.
Is AllaQuix® the same chitosan technology used by the U.S. Military?
AllaQuix® High-Performance is made with the same chitosan hemostatic technology that has been used by the U.S. Military for over 20 years.
Is it safe for people with shellfish allergies?
Chitosan is derived from shellfish, but the deacetylation process removes the proteins responsible for allergic reactions. A study in Military Medicine found that all subjects with documented shellfish allergy tolerated the chitosan dressing without reaction. Patients with known allergies should exercise reasonable caution. Check with your doctor first.
How is AllaQuix® sterilized?
AllaQuix® High-Performance is sterilized by gamma irradiation.
What is AllaQuix® not for?
AllaQuix® is not for medical emergencies, arterial bleeding, severe or persistent bleeding, or internal use. It does not replace stitches and should not be used on visibly infected wounds. For minor topical bleeding only.
