QUICK ANSWER
How to stop a nosebleed at home
Sit upright, lean forward
Sit up straight and lean slightly forward so blood does not run down the throat. Breathe through your mouth.
Pinch soft part of nose
Pinch the soft part of the nose just below the bony bridge. Apply firm, steady pressure.
Hold 10–15 minutes, or insert plug
Hold without releasing for a full 10 to 15 minutes. If you have AllaQuix® Nose Bleed Plugs on hand, insert one as directed and hold light pressure.
Calcium alginate gels on contact with blood
AllaQuix® Nose Bleed Plugs use calcium alginate — the same hemostatic material as our AllaQuix® Lite dressings. On contact with blood, the calcium alginate forms a soft gel that conforms to the nasal cavity. The plug is designed to absorb up to 20× its weight in fluid while the dual mechanism of action supports hemostasis at the wound site.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I insert an AllaQuix® Nose Bleed Plug?
Open the sterile pouch and gently insert the plug into the bleeding nostril until comfortable. The calcium alginate gels on contact with blood and conforms to the nasal cavity. Hold light pressure on the outside of the nose for several minutes. Leave the plug in place while the bleeding stops, then remove gently — moisten with saline if needed.
How long can I leave the plug in?
Leave it in until the bleeding has stopped — usually within 5 to 15 minutes. For routine nuisance nosebleeds you can remove it once the bleeding has clearly stopped. Always follow the product Instructions for Use included in the package.
Can I use them if I'm on blood thinners?
Yes. AllaQuix® Nose Bleed Plugs are made for people who normally have trouble stopping bleeding, including patients on warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Plavix, or daily aspirin. They are for minor topical bleeding only, not emergencies.
Are they safe for children?
Calcium alginate is plant-derived, drug-free, and hypoallergenic. Use age-appropriate judgment for nasal insertion and supervise children. If a child has frequent nosebleeds, talk to your pediatrician.
What if the nosebleed keeps coming back?
Recurrent nosebleeds can have many causes — dry air, allergies, deviated septum, anticoagulant therapy, or an underlying medical issue. If nosebleeds happen frequently, last longer than 20 minutes, or are very heavy, see an ENT or your primary care provider.
When should I go to the doctor for a nosebleed?
Seek care if the nosebleed won't stop after 20 minutes of pressure, is very heavy, follows a head or face injury, or is paired with dizziness, weakness, or trouble breathing. Always seek emergency care for severe bleeding.
