What to expect after Mohs, a biopsy, or a minor procedure
Some bleeding is normal in the first 24 to 48 hours after a procedure, especially at Mohs surgery sites and IV catheter removals. Most of it is nuisance bleeding that stops with steady pressure. A small percentage of patients have a late bleed at hour 24 to 36 that catches them off guard, and that's when having the right dressing on hand matters.
For routine wound coverage, you want an adhesive island dressing that's gentle on the skin and stays put through showers. For the late bleed, you want a hemostatic dressing you can press in place while you call your surgeon's office. AllaQuix® Basic covers the first job. AllaQuix® High-Performance covers the second.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE
The 14-day at-home routine
Day 0 to 2: keep the original dressing on
Follow your surgeon's instructions. Most say keep the original pressure dressing on for the first 24 to 48 hours, even through showers if it's waterproof.
Day 2 to 7: clean and re-cover daily
After 48 hours, remove the original dressing, rinse with clean water, pat dry, apply petrolatum, and cover with AllaQuix® Basic sized for the wound.
Day 7 to 14: switch to a Bandage
Once the incision has sealed, switch to an AllaQuix® Bandage for daily protection. The smaller, more discreet format is easier on healing skin.
If the wound bleeds at any point
Apply AllaQuix® High-Performance directly over the wound, press firmly for 15 minutes, and call your surgeon's office. Go to the ER if it does not stop.
FAQ
Common questions
What dressings should I use after Mohs surgery?
Your surgeon's office will send you home with an initial dressing. For the rest of the 14-day healing window you want two things in your kit: an adhesive island dressing like AllaQuix® Basic that's gentle on the skin and stays put through showers (4×6 for chest/back/shoulder, mini for face), and a hemostatic dressing like AllaQuix® High-Performance chitosan gauze that you can press in place if you get a late bleed at hour 24 to 36. Always follow your surgeon's specific instructions and call their office if anything looks wrong.
Is it normal to have some bleeding 24 hours after Mohs surgery?
Some light bleeding or spotting in the first 24 to 48 hours is common after Mohs and many minor procedures. A small number of patients get a late bleed around hour 24 to 36. Reapply firm pressure for 15 minutes — adding an AllaQuix® High-Performance chitosan dressing over the site can help — and call your surgeon's office. Heavy or spurting bleeding needs urgent care.
When should I call my surgeon about post-op bleeding?
Call your surgeon's office if bleeding soaks through the dressing, doesn't stop after 15 minutes of steady pressure, restarts repeatedly, or if the site looks infected (spreading redness, pus, fever). Go to the ER for heavy or spurting bleeding. Always follow the specific instructions your surgeon sent home with you.
Can I shower after Mohs surgery?
Follow your surgeon's instructions — most ask you to keep the original dressing on and dry for the first 24 to 48 hours, then resume gentle showering while keeping the site clean. After the first couple of days, clean the wound, pat dry, apply petrolatum, and re-cover with an AllaQuix® Basic island dressing sized to the site.
How long until a Mohs surgery wound fully heals?
Surface healing typically takes about two weeks, though deeper remodeling continues for months and varies by site and size. Plan to keep the site covered and protected for roughly 14 days. Your surgeon will give you a timeline specific to your wound.
What kind of bandage is best for sensitive skin after a biopsy?
Look for a dressing with a soft, gentle adhesive that peels off without pulling at fragile skin. AllaQuix® Bandages use calcium alginate with a hypoallergenic adhesive border, which makes them a good fit for IV-catheter sites, small biopsies, and sensitive or older skin.
