One large dressing beats three overlapping bandages
Overlapping small bandages leaves adhesive on or near the wound, gaps where the pads meet, and more to peel off at every change. One dressing that's long enough keeps a single absorbent pad over the whole area and the adhesive on healthy skin.
The AllaQuix® Basic 4 × 6 has a 2 × 4 inch pad and the 4 × 14 has a 2 × 12 inch pad, each surrounded by a 1 inch adhesive border. Both are breathable, soft and flexible, so they move with knees, hips and backs. The Basic line is designed to protect the wound to allow faster healing.
Good fits for a large bandage
- Knee and hip replacement incisions, once your surgeon clears dressing changes
- Abdominal and C-section incisions
- Back and spine incisions
- Larger scrapes and abrasions
- Light to moderate draining wounds
- Covering and securing other dressings

How to put on a long dressing without wrinkles
Long dressings are easier with a plan. Clean and dry the skin around the wound first, because adhesive won't hold on damp skin or lotion.
The routine
- Peel half the backing and anchor one end of the border on healthy skin.
- Lay the pad along the wound as you peel the rest, smoothing as you go.
- Don't stretch the dressing to make it reach. Stretched adhesive pulls on the skin.
- Over a joint, bend it slightly while you apply the dressing so it doesn't tug when you move.
- Press the border down all the way around.
- Don't cut the dressing to size. Cutting breaks the sterile pad and the border. Choose the size that fits instead.
FAQ
Questions about large bandages
What size bandage do I need for a knee replacement incision?
Most knee replacement incisions are longer than a standard bandage. The AllaQuix® Basic 4 × 14 has a 12 inch pad that covers a long incision in one piece. Follow your surgeon's instructions on when to change the first dressing.
Are these large bandages waterproof?
No. AllaQuix® Basic is breathable non-woven material, not waterproof. Ask your surgeon about showering, then put on a fresh dressing afterward if the old one got wet.
Are they good for sensitive skin?
AllaQuix® Basic is latex-free and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. For very thin or fragile skin, ask your care team whether an adhesive border is right for you.
Can I cut an extra large dressing to fit?
No. Cutting compromises sterility and the adhesive border. Pick the size whose pad covers the whole wound.
How often should I change a large dressing?
Usually once a day, and any time it gets wet, dirty or loose, unless your doctor gave you a different schedule.
Can I buy extra large bandages in bulk?
Yes. The 4 × 6 comes in a case of 12 boxes and the 4 × 14 in a case of 10 boxes of 25. Choose the case option when you add it to your cart.
