FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an island dressing?

An adhesive island dressing is a sterile wound dressing with two parts: a soft, non-woven absorbent pad in the center (the "island") surrounded by a hypoallergenic adhesive border (the "sea"). The pad holds wound fluid and protects the cut. The adhesive border seals the dressing to the skin so it stays put through movement, showering, and clothing friction. AllaQuix® Basic is a medical-grade adhesive island dressing available over the counter.

Is an island dressing the same as bordered gauze?

Yes. Island dressing and bordered gauze dressing describe the same design: an absorbent pad (the island) in the middle of an adhesive border. AllaQuix® Basic uses a soft non-woven pad, which lifts away from the wound more gently than woven gauze.

What's the difference between the sizes?

Every size has a 1-inch adhesive border. The pad inside is what changes:

  • 2⅜ × 2¾ inch, ⅜ × ¾" pad, for fingers, IV catheter sites and small incisions.
  • 4 × 4 inch, 2 × 2" pad, for everyday cuts and small surgical incisions.
  • 4 × 6 inch, 2 × 4" pad, for longer incisions and light to moderate draining wounds.
  • 4 × 14 inch, 2 × 12" pad, for long post-surgical incisions.

Choose the size where the pad fully covers the wound and the border sits on healthy skin.

Can I use AllaQuix® Basic on post-surgical wounds?

Yes. AllaQuix® Basic is designed for post-surgical incisions, including Mohs surgery sites and minor outpatient procedures. The non-adherent pad protects the suture line, and the hypoallergenic adhesive holds without irritating fragile peri-surgical skin. Always follow your clinician's post-op dressing-change schedule.

Can clinics and care facilities buy by the case?

Yes. Every size is sold by the box or by the case: the 2⅜ × 2¾ in a case of 20 boxes, the 4 × 4 and 4 × 6 in cases of 12 boxes, and the 4 × 14 in a case of 10 boxes. See how home health agencies and surgery centers use AllaQuix®, or talk to our team about volume pricing.

Is AllaQuix® Basic safe for sensitive or fragile skin?

Yes. AllaQuix® Basic uses a gentle, hypoallergenic adhesive designed to minimize irritation on wear and removal. It is suitable for sensitive skin, older skin, and pediatric use. For patients with known adhesive allergies, test a small area first.

Can I shower with the dressing on?

The adhesive border is moisture-resistant, so brief shower exposure is generally okay. However, the dressing is not fully waterproof. Avoid soaking the dressing (no baths, swimming, or extended water exposure). If the dressing becomes saturated, replace it.

How often should I change the dressing?

Change the dressing at least once daily, or sooner if it becomes wet, dirty, loose, or saturated with wound fluid. For post-surgical care, follow your clinician's schedule, which is typically daily for the first 7 to 14 days.

Is AllaQuix® Basic latex-free?

Yes. AllaQuix® Basic is 100% latex-free, making it safe for individuals with latex allergies or sensitivities.

Can I cut the dressing to fit a smaller area?

No. Cutting the dressing is not recommended because it compromises sterility and reduces the effectiveness of the adhesive seal. Choose the smallest size that fully covers your wound and the surrounding skin you want to protect.

Do I need a prescription?

No. AllaQuix® Basic is available over the counter without a prescription. It is the same medical-grade quality used in clinical settings, packaged for home and over-the-counter use.
